Lauren Spierer, the Indiana college student who disappeared in 2011, has been missing for five years. The woman who attended Indiana University Bloomington vanished after a night of partying with friends.
Over the years, Lauren’s family has lived through a series of holidays and other life milestones without her. The young woman from Edgemont, New York, was just 20 when she went missing.
Lauren’s mother, Charlene Spierer, tells People magazine that life “has to go on” and that the family has been “able to embrace those happy things.”
Lauren’s mother explains that time has passed by in an instant while trying to figure out what happened to her daughter.
“Your life is so consumed with trying to find your loved one, you don’t even realize that time is going by,” Spierer said. “It feels to me like it’s still June 3, 2011.”

Bloomington police have been unsuccessful in finding Lauren Spierer. Authorities have received more than 3,500 tips and have logged 2,505 overtime hours. Searching through a landfill and the rundown of “possible connections to a number of criminal suspects arrested in other jurisdictions for heinous crimes against female victims,” have turned up nothing, a statement from by police reveals.
The police department declare that the investigation into the missing woman’s disappearance “has never been considered or labeled a ‘cold case,'” the Herald Times reports. It continues that “there is work being done on the case literally every day.”
Charlene Spierer said that she always hoped and prayed that her daughter’s disappearance wouldn’t make it to the annual mark, yet the fifth anniversary looms. She said that it’s “always tough for us when these markers come up” because it’s a bigger focus in the public’s mind, but to them, it’s the same everyday turmoil in trying to bring back Lauren.
A murder trial set for Daniel Messel appears on the “surface” to be linked with Lauren Spierer’s disappearance. He’s charged with killing Hannah Wilson, 22, another Indiana University student; her body was found in April 2015. She was last spotted leaving the same bar that Lauren had visited the night before her disappearance. The Spierers have been told there’s no connection to Wilson’s murder and Lauren’s disappearance.
According to the investigation, Lauren’s last hours were spent at a sports bar where witnesses claim she appeared intoxicated. She left her cell phone and shoes behind, fell twice, and hit her head on her walk back home, which was five minutes away. Lauren never made it home in the early morning hours of June 3, 2011.
Friends and acquaintances present at the time of Lauren’s final hours have made her mother and father, Robert Spierer, suspicious ever since.

Police confirmed that a raid last January on a registered sex offender’s former residence was related to a tip in the Spierer case. Details on that development haven’t been released.
“We’re really still pretty much in the dark,” said Charlene Spierer.
Spierer is adamant that more than one person was involved in Lauren’s disappearance. She’s been extremely frustrated in the case and thinks there’s someone out there who knows something and isn’t coming forward. She said she’s “not asking to know who the guilty party is” but just wants information that will bring her daughter home.
This summer will be especially hard for Lauren’s mother because it’s the 10th anniversary of a Pennsylvania summer camp her daughter enjoyed so much. It’s a time when campers return to uncover time capsules that contain treasures for their futures a decade later.
“I can’t even tell you how much she loved her camp,” said Lauren’s mom. “I think it would just be too hard for us to go.”
