Ken Kratz, the prosecuting attorney in the Steven Avery trial, is planning to write a book on the Making a Murderer case. The lawyer plans to show all sides of the investigation, including many parts left out of the popular Netflix documentary.
Us Weekly reports Kratz decided to write a book detailing the globally-popular case “because the one voice forgotten to this point is Teresa Halbach.” Kratz was the District Attorney of Calumet County and responsible for Avery’s prosecution after he was accused of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach.
On January 24, Kathleen Zellner, Avery’s new defense attorney, tweeted a letter that Kratz allegedly sent to Avery in prison, asking him to “be honest” about what happened to Halbach, while proposing a book deal. Zellner, clearly upset with the letter, compared Kratz to a “bloodsucking vampire.”

In 2010, Kratz resigned from his position as district attorney due to involvement in a sexting scandal. After attempting to initiate a sexual relationship with a 25-year-old domestic abuse victim via text, not only was Kratz’s law license suspended, but he was also required to pay $23,904 to cover disciplinary appealings.
Since then, Kratz became a defense attorney and became involved in the Making a Murderer documentary after accusing filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos of leaving crucial evidence out of the film. Kratz said the following.
“This is not a documentary at all. It’s still a defense advocacy piece. Their bias, their outcome, where they want the viewers to go with this, what they spoon feed the viewers, what they pick and choose by way of facts, what they leave out, importantly, causes only one reaction and only one conclusion: that Mr. Avery was innocent, and that he was the subject of planted evidence.”

Kratz was also vilified in the documentary as the “evil prosecutor,” and hopes that by writing the book, people will have a better idea of what really transcribed throughout the events that led up to Avery’s conviction. So far, there’s been an outpour of support for Steven Avery, as well as his nephew, Brendan Dassey, also serving a life sentence for Teresa Halbach’ murder.
After watching the film, many people believe that both Avery and Dassey were framed for Halbach’s murder, something that Kratz doesn’t have an issue with.
“If I was spoon-fed only what the Netflix documentary wanted me to see, I’d come to exactly the same conclusion. I’d be outraged.”
Kratz reiterated that there’s so much more to the investigation that was left out, and he intends to inform the public of it.
“There are parts of this case that no one else knows.”
Yet, many still think that Kratz has a long battle ahead of him, especially after his indiscretions in the past as well as the way he handled himself during Avery’s trial.
Regardless, Kratz is intent on showing all sides of the case, and feels that writing a book is the best way to reach people and help them remember that Halbach and her family are the main victims in the tragedy, not Avery.

“This was a case that included the murder and dismemberment of a 25-year-old woman. It’s not fair to her memory, or to her family. They deserve some closure.”
Ken Kratz plans to work on the book based off of the Making the Murderer case over the course of the next four months. He plans to “share a portion of the proceeds…honoring the memory of Teresa Halbach.”
