Ohio’s Planned Parenthood allegedly disposed aborted baby parts in landfills – a violation of a state law, according to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.
The Buckeye State’s Planned Parenthood got the attention of the attorney general after an investigation found that the non-profit’s three locations sent aborted baby parts to their disposal service, which then dropped them into landfills.
Planned Parenthood denied the allegations, but also said that the question about how aborted baby parts ended up in landfills is something for their disposal service to answer.
On Friday, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced that his office has concluded its investigation into the alleged sale of fetal tissue by Planned Parenthood affiliates. Though the investigation didn’t find any indication that fetal tissue was being sold by Planned Parenthood affiliates in Ohio, the investigation did reveal that that aborted baby parts from Planned Parenthood facilities are being disposed of in a number of landfills.
The Charitable Law Section requested financial documents and records from the specific Planned Parenthood clinics as well as companies they contracted. The investigation did not find that fetal tissue or aborted baby parts were being sold by Planned Parenthood affiliates in Ohio.
However, the investigation did discover that the disposal methods documented by the Planned Parenthood affiliates violate an Ohio law that was adopted in 1975, which requires that a “fetus shall be disposed of in a humane manner.”
The attorney general’s investigation found that all three Ohio Planned Parenthood affiliates have sent aborted baby parts, or fetal remains, to companies, which disposed of the fetuses in landfills.
In addition, the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bedford Heights, Ohio stated it uses only one company for disposal. However, that disposal company stated to investigators that it is not their corporate policy to accept fetal remains or aborted baby parts for disposal.
In the press release, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine briefly spoke of the aborted baby parts being disposed of in landfills.
“Disposing of aborted fetuses from an abortion by sending them to a landfill is callous and completely inhumane. It is important the public be aware that these practices are taking place at these Ohio facilities.”
Attorney General DeWine referred his investigative findings to the Ohio Department of Health for further action.
In a call with The Hill reporters on Friday, Ohio Planned Parenthood president Stephanie Kight was asked if aborted baby parts, or fetal remains were dumped in landfills.
She said fetal remains are “handled properly at Planned Parenthood,” but referred questions about what happens after that to the disposal company, adding, “You’re really asking a question for the disposal company.”
When asked where Planned Parenthood thought the aborted baby parts ended up, if not in landfills, Kight responded, “The Ohio attorney general hasn’t said that any law has been broken. What he seems to be upset about is what the law allows.”
Kight said that the new allegations are trying to bury the fact that the investigation found no evidence to support the original allegation that Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue. In her opinion, the investigation is “highly motivated by a political agenda that both the governor and attorney general are pushing right now in Ohio.”
Kight claims the aborted baby parts are disposed of in the same way medical material from other healthcare providers is disposed of.
“Every healthcare provider follows these laws, every surgery center, every hospital.”
Ohio is the second state to point to Planned Parenthood’s unlawfully disposing of aborted baby parts. In South Carolina, the abortion business was actually caught illegally dumping the bodies of aborted babies in a public landfill.
